The Clue Experiment

Hello there!

So a few weeks ago I started a personal project, totally for fun. I started designing my own "Clue - The Detective Game" playing cards. I loved "Clue" as a kid, and played the game with my sisters very often.

Of course, the game has been done and redone by many artists over the years and each edition has it's own style and beauty. This experiment was about seeing what I could do with the game if I was given the chance. I wasn't commissioned for this and I only did 9 of the 18 original cards.

Designing Board Games
In the past, I have designed assets for many online games, but this was the first time designing cards for a board game, which was in some ways similar and in other ways different.

What's similar? The need for unity and harmony between the cards, you need to set your mind on a visual signature very early on and keep it while you're making each card.  For that reason, I recommend sketching all the elements before starting to color anything. Also, after you've done sketching you can experiment with a few different colors and treatment. I like to do this, because it keeps me from doubting my choices later on during the process. Once you've settled on a way of doing things, it will be much easier and faster to go through coloring all the cards. Here's a few ideas on Scarlett's character. And the overall style I've chosen for the different types of cards.

What's different? Board games do not belong on a screen, but rather on your kitchen table surrounded by your friends, in your young and not so young hands! Because of that you interact very differently with them and the size and level of details are very important. While working on this project I kept going back and forth between a zoomed view and an actual size view of each card. That way I avoided working on details that would not show up later on, and saved a lot of time. I also kept and updated file of all the cards next to each other, to make sure they were consistent in style. Finally, contrast and colors are also big issues, and if I wanted to print these, I would probably have to test the colors until I found the best settings.

In conclusion
Not surprisingly design board games is a labor of the heart, because It's a long process that demands focus and vision. Surprisingly for me, as I usually prefer to draw characters, the room Cards were the most fun! Designing environment can be as fulfilling as designing a cool character! I definitely want to design more projects like this!

If you've read through this post... WOW, you're amazing! Thank you and feel free to comment below and let me know what you're up to! What's your current board game design project? What should I re-design next?

Treasures In the Attic

I was so happy this morning as I was going through an old storage disk and found so much old illustrations! It gave me the chance to look back at work from 3 to 6 years ago and see how far I've come since then. It brought back all the trials and errors and reminded me of the fact that when you're an Artist you never stop honing your craft. I could see the path (not a straight one) I took to find my own voice and illustration style.

Also, I remembered where I was when making those illustrations... for some, I was still in school learning animation and not sleeping very much for others I just started my first Studio Job and was inspired by my coworkers. Images can definitely take you places, but when you're the author of those images, they can also take you back in time to a younger self.

I made this Lady Gaga inspired illustration for a contest on sketchoholic.com mostly to practice drawing sexy ladies. I had so much fun and ended up winning the opportunity to be published in their monthly magazine!

3 years ago I took an amazing Schoolism.com Class with Louis Gonzalez, and learned to draw better character poses. I made this little mouse when I finished the course! I love it's simplicity and cuteness!

This last one, I made while taking the Make Art that Sells Boot-camp with Lilla Rogers. That course opened me up to what was possible in the field of Illustration and made try my hand at projects that were completely new for me! I was inspired by some vintage paper dolls I found in a shop around my neighborhood.

I hope to never stop learning and trying new things! Looking back at how much I've improved, I'm excited to see were hard work will take me!

Princess Duo

Greetings to you!

I've been wanting to draw princesses for a while now! It has been a dream subject since childhood, I really can't help it! It's been real fun to draw the dresses! Here I've been inspired by rococo clothes, as I've watched Sofia Coppola's Marie-Antoinette for the gazillion time and tried giving it a simpler more graphic twist!

Favorite sketch

Hello!!

Today, I'd like to share an illustration I just made available on my shop!

As many of you know lately SNL celerated its 40th anniversary and made a very long special to commemorate it's best sketches and comedians. I enjoyed it very much and it inspired me to draw a tribute of some of my favorite characters! If you're an SNL fan you probably know this character as Matt Foley, the motivational speaker played by the late Chris Farley. Chris Farley had many amazing characters but this one is by far my favorite! Here he is with his famous catchphrase... in a van, down by the river!

This print is also avalable on t-shirts and hoodies, as well as pillows and tote bags!

Let me know what you think, should I make a series?

Improv Poster

It's been a while crocodiles!

The Start of the year went fairly slowly for me. It was a nice change from the busy busy holidays! Now we are almost spring and things are getting back to their normal pace! As many of you know, working as a freelance illustrator can be fairly lonely, and so, to get me out of the house and with people, I've been doing improvisational theater!

Improv is great! I recommend it to everyone, specially people who want to get out of their shells, laugh and learn with other comedy lovers! I have been taking wonderful classes at the Montreal Improv Theater for about two years, and so I was thrilled when they asked me to make a poster for one of their events called "Ketchup Moutarde", an improv duos show in french held monthly! If you're in the Montreal Area please check out their calendar for more amazing shows in French and in English!

I'm proud to present their new poster, inspired by that lovely condiment couple that is Ketchup and Mustard!
Making Posters is really fun!

See ya!

Typo Play #Halloween

Hello Y'all,

I have been gone for a while, me and my other half were on vacation, trying to enjoy the last days of sun before the constant rain! Meanwhile, I did find some time to draw and explore, specially with hand lettering. It was really fun, although much harder than it seems! I managed to complete this Halloween Poster (my first!) and I'm pretty happy, because it turned out better than what I expected! I tried to use many different styles of writing while trying to keep it harmonious. I would love some feedback from you guys, as I'm really trying to improve my work! What do you think of the lettering and of the color scheme!? Also Halloween is around the corner!!... any costume ideas? I have to say I think I'd like to be a witch this year! Check out this pinterest board on the subject! Long live the classics! :)

Fall is Here!

Hello Internet,

Don't know about where you live, but here in Montreal it seems like Summer's officially gone and that Autumn is here. The change in temperature was pretty drastic too, going from 20 to 0 overnight! Although summer left us without a warning I am pretty excited for the new season. Fall is definitely my favorite time or the year. The weather is not too hot, not too cold and I get to wear my favorite coat and take long peaceful walks in the woods. I love all things autumn like pumpkin soup, cinnamon cocoa and all the colors that nature brings! I like to enjoy all those things knowing that winter will come soon and beware... because winter in Montreal is not for the faint hearted!

And so, to celebrate Fall I have made this themed greeting card design; Meet Gumbo Jones, the banjo playing Frog and his friends the Worm Trio! Happy Fall Y'all!

Bonjour Internet!

Happy Fall Y'all!

My postcards are here!

Hello Internet!

I am exited to say that I finally got my promo postcards! And it's a big deal because they are my first ever! As I am trying to make it in illustration, I have had to plan a promotion calendar and build mailing lists! Which is was little stressful, but in a good way! I can't wait to see what jobs will come my way by using this tool! I'm happy with how they turned out, Moo.com still continues to impress me with their quality! Also I'd like to give a big shout out to Holli Conger who helped me in the past two months to get myself started and create a facebook page, resurrect my website and who has all around taught me a lot!

Dandy Bones is back!

Hello Internet!

Like I already shared last week, I've had so much fun creating that character! So here's a new illustration showing Dandy's favorite activity, sipping on some Absinthe in his drawing room! Funny enough, I've also had a craving for retro horror movies! 1992's Dracula anyone?

Bonjour Internet!

DB Sketch

So I really had fun with my previous character, Mr. Dandy Bones! And so, I'm working on a new illustration! uhmmm what colors should I use?

Global Talent Search 2014

Hello internet people!

I'm so excited today, because I submitted my Global Talent Search piece. This year the assignment was to make a wall art piece either for the adult or children's market using the theme of terrariums! It was super fun, and really made THINK about color a lot! Would you hang my piece in your little girls room?

Bonjour internet!
